You get the engineer, not a call centre
Scotgas Technical Services is run out of Paisley and covers the towns around it. When you ring, you get the person who will be doing the work. That means I can usually tell you on the phone whether something needs a visit, and roughly what it is likely to be, before either of us spends money finding out.
The work splits about three ways: annual servicing for homeowners who want their boiler kept going, breakdowns, and the compliance round for landlords and letting agents — gas safety records, legionella assessments and appliance testing.
What you get on a visit
- A straight answer about what is wrong, in plain terms, before any work starts.
- A price before I begin, not after. If something else turns up once the case is off, you hear about it then and decide.
- Written readings where they exist — combustion figures on a service, test results on PAT testing — rather than just a signature.
- Being told when something does not need doing. A boiler that has plenty of life left gets said so.
- The place left as I found it. Dust sheets down, case sealed properly, nothing left in the cupboard.
Registration
All gas work in the UK must be carried out by an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Every registered engineer carries an ID card showing which categories of work they are qualified for, and it has an expiry date on the back. You are entitled to ask to see it before anyone touches your boiler, and you should — of any engineer, including me.
